Train/Bus Previously, taking the train to Meteora was a convenient and scenic option. Trains to Kalambaka, the nearest town to Meteora, departed from Athens’ Larissis Station, and the journey took approximately 4-5 hours. However, as of 2024 (the date of our visit), the railway lines are out of service due to damage from heavy rains in the region throughout the year.
As a result, the train route has been replaced by a bus route, which also departs from Larissis Station in Athens. The bus journey is comfortable, taking 4 hours each way, allowing you to enjoy the landscapes of central Greece. A useful tip is to take the metro to Larissis Station, depending on where you are staying in Athens, to ensure you arrive on time for the buses. Public transportation in Athens is very efficient, costing an average of 2.8 Euros per trip.
Car If you prefer flexibility, renting a car in Athens is an excellent option. The drive takes about 4 hours and allows you to explore at your own pace. The route is straightforward, following the E75 and then the E65 highway towards Kalambaka.
